He moved to Dar es Salaam in 1972, where his style evolved through the Tingatinga school and exposure to other modern artists. His works, characterized by brightly colored figures, are distinguished by social commentary and humor, and have been exhibited worldwide. Themes and Style He is nicknamed "the Picasso of Africa"​​for his ability to innovate artistic traditions in a contemporary context. His works draw on Makonde traditions, particularly the figures of shetani (spirits). His style is characterized by constantly moving figures, bright colors, and a strong sense of social commentary and caricature. Many critics have noted the influence and similarities between his work and the graffiti of Keith Haring. International Recognition Lilanga has become one of the most internationally recognized Tanzanian artists. His works have been exhibited in numerous countries, including France, the United Kingdom, Japan, and the United States. His creations are present in important private and institutional collections and have been shown in prestigious museums such as the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Guggenheim in Bilbao. The work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from the capt. Felix Lorenz.
