Artist Profile Kato Takuo (1917-2005) was the sixth-generation master of Koubei Kiln, one of Japan's most prestigious ceramic workshops with a history spanning over 200 years. Designated as a Living National Treasure in 1995 for his mastery of sancai (three-color) glazing techniques, Kato devoted his life to researching and reviving ancient ceramic traditions. His journey into ceramic archaeology began in 1961 when he studied in Finland and encountered ancient Persian pottery. Captivated by its beauty, Kato spent over 25 years researching and successfully recreating luster ware, a technique that had been lost since the 17th century. His work with Persian ceramics earned him international recognition and established him as a pioneer in the revival of ancient glazing methods.
