Item Description:
This elegant tea bowl features a peony (botan) design by Kayama Tetsuya 加山哲也 (b. 1954), a distinguished contemporary ceramic artist known for his painterly approach to pottery.
As the son of renowned Nihonga painter Kayama Matazo, Tetsuya inherited a deep understanding of traditional Japanese aesthetics while developing his own distinctive ceramic vocabulary.
The bowl showcases a beautifully rendered peony motif, executed with the refined brushwork that characterizes Kayama's work.
His background in Japanese painting is evident in the composition, where he treats the ceramic surface as a canvas, creating "vessels that display paintings." The peony, a symbol of prosperity, honor, and nobility in Japanese culture, is depicted with delicate attention to detail, its full blooms and lush petals capturing both the flower's physical beauty and its symbolic resonance.
Kayama's technique demonstrates his mastery of underglaze iron painting (tetsu-e) combined with subtle color work, creating depth and dimensionality on the curved surface of the tea bowl.
The piece reflects his ability to balance decorative beauty with functional form—a fundamental principle in Japanese tea ceremony aesthetics.
Born in Yokohama as the eldest son of Kayama Matazo, Tetsuya initially studied Nihonga at Tama Art University before apprenticing under ceramic master Bannoura Shiro in Iga.
He established his own kiln in Oiso, Kanagawa Prefecture in 1989 and has since held numerous solo exhibitions at prestigious department stores throughout Japan, including regular shows at Takashimaya.
This tea bowl comes with its original signed wooden box (tomobako), confirming its authenticity and provenance.

Artist Profile
Kayama Tetsuya 加山哲也 (b. 1954) is a prominent contemporary Japanese ceramic artist whose work uniquely bridges the worlds of traditional pottery and Japanese painting. Born in Yokohama as the eldest son of celebrated Nihonga master Kayama Matazo (1927-2004), Tetsuya grew up immersed in the refined aesthetics of Japanese art.
After graduating from Tama Art University's Department of Japanese Painting in 1978, Kayama made the pivotal decision to pursue ceramics rather than follow his father's path as a painter. He apprenticed under Bannoura Shiro at the Otowasanbo studio in Iga, where he learned traditional ceramic techniques and developed his distinctive approach to decoration.
Kayama's work is characterized by his painterly treatment of ceramic surfaces, earning his pieces the description of "vessels that display paintings." Drawing on his training in Nihonga, he applies motifs from nature—birds, insects, fish, flowers, and other subjects—with the sensitivity of a painter working on silk or paper. This approach represents a continuation of the tradition established by earlier artist-potters like Ogata Kenzan, who also integrated painting and ceramics.
In 1989, Kayama established his own kiln in Oiso, Kanagawa Prefecture, where he continues to work today. His career includes numerous solo exhibitions at major department stores throughout Japan, beginning with his first show at Takashimaya Nihonbashi in 1992. A significant milestone came in 2001 with a joint exhibition with his father at multiple Takashimaya locations.
Kayama's technical repertoire is remarkably diverse, encompassing Korean-inspired buncheong ware, iron-painted decoration, red overglaze enamel, and elaborate gold and silver decoration. His recent work includes ambitious large-scale pieces featuring dramatic dragon motifs that demonstrate his exploration of ceramic traditions.
As a member of the Japan Ceramic Society, Kayama represents the vitality of contemporary Japanese ceramics, honoring traditional techniques while pursuing fresh artistic expression. His work is sought after by tea ceremony practitioners and collectors who appreciate the convergence of functional beauty and artistic refinement.
