Item Description:
This refined sake bottle, which also serves as a flower vase, is created by Satoh Kazuhiko (b. 1947), a highly respected contemporary ceramic artist known for his innovative approach to stone-based ceramics.
The piece exemplifies his mastery of textured surfaces and sophisticated form, demonstrating the technical excellence he developed under the guidance of two Living National Treasures.
The vessel displays the distinctive characteristics of Satoh's mature work—a tactile, organic surface quality achieved through his signature techniques.
The form is both sculptural and functional, suitable for displaying a single stem or branch in the restrained aesthetic of traditional flower arrangement, while also serving its original purpose as a sake vessel.

Artist Profile
Satoh Kazuhiko (b. 1947) is a distinguished contemporary Japanese ceramic artist celebrated for his innovative work in stone-based ceramics. Born in Fujisawa, Kanagawa Prefecture, Satoh represents a direct lineage from some of Japan's most revered ceramic masters.
After graduating from Tokyo University of the Arts in 1970, Satoh continued his studies in the graduate ceramics program, where he had the rare privilege of studying under two Living National Treasures: Fujimoto Yoshimichi, designated for overglaze enameled porcelain, and Tamura Koichi, designated for iron-painted pottery. This exceptional training provided Satoh with a profound understanding of both decorative and sculptural approaches to ceramics.
His graduate thesis work was awarded the prestigious Salon de Printemps Prize in 1972, launching a career marked by continuous artistic development and exhibition success. In 1973, he held his first solo exhibition at Tokyo Central Salon, beginning a pattern of regular exhibitions that continues to the present day.
Satoh established his studio with a kiln at his home, where he has pursued his distinctive artistic vision. His work is characterized by richly textured surfaces and forms that emphasize the inherent qualities of clay and stone, often incorporating linear patterns and organic textures that suggest natural geological processes. He has developed his own techniques for achieving these effects, creating works that are both contemporary in sensibility and rooted in Japanese ceramic tradition.
Beyond his studio practice, Satoh has contributed significantly to ceramic education and discourse. He has published six books on hand-building techniques, sharing his knowledge with aspiring ceramists. He has also served as a lecturer at the Asahi Culture Center and has conducted workshops both in Japan and internationally, including at prestigious venues like the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park.
His work has been featured in major exhibitions throughout Japan and has appeared on programs such as "Yakimono Tanbo" on television. Satoh's contributions to contemporary Japanese ceramics have established him as an important figure in the field, admired for his technical mastery and artistic integrity.
