Artist Profile
Aoki Mokubei was born in 1767 in Gion, Kyoto, at the tea house "Kiya." His childhood name was Yasohachi, and he later used various art names including Seirai, Hyakuroku Sanjin, and in his later years, Robei after losing his hearing.
At age 29, Mokubei encountered the ceramics treatise "Taosetsu" by Zhu Lideng at the library of the literatus Kimura Kenkado, which inspired him to pursue pottery. He studied under Okuda Eisen and established his own kiln in Kyoto's Awataguchi district at age 30, quickly gaining recognition.
In 1807, Mokubei was invited by the Kaga Domain to help revive Kutani ware, establishing the Kasugayama kiln in Kanazawa. His work spans a wide range including white porcelain, celadon, overglaze enamels, underglaze blue, kochi-style, and kinrande, with particular excellence in sencha tea wares. His deep study of ancient ceramics, particularly works from the continent, led him to create distinctive interpretations that established new standards in Kyoto pottery.
Mokubei is counted among the three great masters of late Edo period Kyoto pottery, alongside Eiraku Hozen and Nin'ami Dohachi. He was also accomplished in literati painting, with notable landscape works. He died in 1833 at age 67, leaving a profound influence on ceramic art.
