The 2205-0550 delivers heritage, craftsmanship, and unmistakable style. Caliber 2205 movement is a classic Japanese mechanical movement that exemplifies Seiko’s technical ingenuity from the late 1960s and early 1970s. This caliber family was designed to deliver precise timekeeping in a compact package — especially important for ladies’ watches of the period when miniaturization challenged traditional movement design. Historical background shows that Seiko and the Caliber 2205 is Seiko’s Mechanical Heritage of the era and that Seiko’s roots go back to 1881 when Kintarō Hattori opened his watch and clock business in Tokyo, setting the stage for over a century of horological innovation. By the late 1960s to early 1970s, Seiko was pushing mechanical movement technology forward — introducing high-beat calibers, automatics with reliable date functions, and compact movements suited to smaller cases without sacrificing precision. The 2205 family was part of this era, intended for women’s mechanical wristwatches that needed to balance size, performance, and reliability. Evolution of the Caliber 2205 was developed as a mechanically reliable caliber capable of high vibrations per hour (28,800 vph), enhancing accuracy and responsiveness for watches with smaller cases. It was often paired with delicate yet durable case designs targeting the women’s market, where functional elegance was key. Variants of the movement were used across reference numbers in the 2205 series, some featuring date windows or automatic winding features, while others emphasized pure hand-winding simplicity. This blend of technical reliability and aesthetic refinement makes watches with Caliber 2205 — like your Model 2205-0550— a touchstone of mechanical watchmaking from that era. ■ Brand: Seiko ■ Model Number:2205-0550 ■ Product Number: 331649 Manufactured March 1963: Seiko serial numbers are six digits long, with the first two digits indicating the year and month of manufacture. The first number(3)indicates the third year of the 1960s, meaning the watch was manufactured in 1963. The next letter (3) is the month code. For Seiko,1-9 represents January through September, O = October, N = November, and D = December. → "N" is November. Therefore, this watch was manufactured in March 1963. ■ Technical features of the 850 movement: • Details of Movement: Seiko caliber 2205 is an automatic (with hand winding) watch movement. Mechanical manual winding (requires daily winding via the crown) • Day / date:Date only • Rate:28,800 bph Beat Rate: 8 beats per second (high-beat for its period) • Number of jewels:17 • Lift angle:48º • Size / diameter: 17.2mm X Height:5.65mm • Hacking: no • Power Reserve: Typical mechanical reserve of the era (often around 30–40 hrs for similar calibers) • Shock Protection: Diashock for balance wheel protection • Development division: Daini (Kameido, Tokyo, Japan) • Notes: The same as cal. 2206 but without day display (date only). PDF guides:Technical guide : 2205A ■Materials: • Case Material: St.Steel • Case Size:25mm excluding crown X 30mm including case lug Thickness:11mm • Dial Display: rich BLUE color dial face with distinctive Fluorescent classic minimalist bar indexes and three hands display, analogue • Case Back: S Steel • Total Weight:42.1gms • Crystal: Plastic • Water-resistant: Water resistance for everyday life water dishing/showering but don't expect too much from it: Even if it was labeled "Wate-resistant" at the time, it doesn't meet modern water-resistant standards. Avoid using it around water. • Diashock: Seiko's unique shock-resistant device that protects the balance wheel from shocks, dramatically improving the accuracy and durability of watches. It is one of Seiko's core technologies, first introduced in Marvel in 1956 and still used in current models such as Presage. • Band: St. Steel Original Seiko Brand Band with 17cm wrist circumference length measured by tapa ■Condition: There are few scratches on the case, case back, band and the Crystal Domed Acrylic visible to the naked eyes. Scars/scratches are in fact proof of real true antique vintage, as they cannot be avoided occurring after long term usage of more than half century. The watch is in good condition overall since it still does work precisely, but very careful handling, when set the time by manual winding, is required due to real vintage watch. During December 16th to 25th the watch had been tested, the time accuracy is less than 30 seconds in 24 hours. Power reserve average is over 30 hours as against over 40hours when it is new. After 60 years’ usage this model is still comparatively well in order. So, the watch is in good condition overall, but very careful handling is required due to real vintage watch. The watch needs to be manually wound daily at your convenience to keep more accurate time. It was functioning normally at the time of listing, so it should continue to function without any issues. Please be sure you are satisfied with the condition before bidding, so please check the photos and product description and ask any questions you may have (please note, however, that we may not be able to answer questions close to the end of the auction)
