Pair of neoclassical decorative lidded vases (kaststel) with bronze mounts – France – circa 1890–1930
Description
Impressive pair of neoclassical decorative lidded vases, traditionally known as a kaststel, executed in deep cobalt blue glazed ceramic and richly embellished with finely cast gilt bronze mounts.
The vases are decorated with expressive ram’s head handles, detailed laurel and grapevine garlands, and beaded rims. The lids are crowned with pinecone finials, a classical motif symbolising abundance and eternity. Each vase stands on a square base adorned with an applied bronze medallion featuring a classical figure.
The quality of the bronze mounts is notable: sharply modelled, deeply cast, and individually finished, indicating craftsmanship associated with late 19th to early 20th century French decorative arts, inspired by Empire and Louis XVI revival styles.
These pieces were intended purely as interior decoration, designed to be displayed as a symmetrical pair on a cabinet, sideboard, or mantelpiece.
Condition
Good antique condition. Minor wear to the bronze mounts and glaze consistent with age and normal use. No visible cracks or restorations observed.
