Exceptional and Unique Offering: Giant Salterocoryphe salteri from Spain | #PAIS 9556
Please refer to the high-resolution images for full details. The photos illustrate the specimen in its matrix context, as an individual fossil, and in close-up views to allow thorough evaluation.
Giant Ordovician trilobites of the species Salterocoryphe salteri are primarily known from Valongo and Arouca in Portugal. While some trilobite fossils—including material tentatively assigned to this group—have also been reported from Valdeorras in Galicia, Spain, complete specimens from this region are exceedingly rare. Truly giant individuals are even more exceptional and remain poorly documented in the scientific literature.
This particular fossil comes from a private collection assembled over 40 years ago and represents a uniquely well-preserved example. It exhibits strong morphological affinities with Salterocoryphe salteri, though the absence of the pygidium—a common feature among calymenid trilobites—prevents definitive species-level identification. For this reason, it is conservatively labeled as Salterocoryphe aff. salteri.
Measuring over 14 cm in length, the specimen displays outstanding surface detail and has undergone no restoration whatsoever—an increasingly rare and highly valued attribute among serious collectors and researchers.
The slightly distorted axial lobe is characteristic of trilobites from northwestern Iberia and lends the fossil a distinctive, almost otherworldly appearance that enhances its visual impact.
This is a one-of-a-kind piece; it is unlikely that another specimen of comparable quality will ever surface. A true museum-grade highlight, it is destined to be the centerpiece of any premier collection. Mounted on a cleanly cut schist slab, it stands upright with elegance and commands attention as a genuine paleontological masterpiece.
