Artist Profile
Mihara Ken was born in 1958 in Hikawa County, Shimane Prefecture (now Izumo City). After being captivated by ceramics during his university years, he apprenticed under Funaki Kenji at the Funaki kiln before establishing his own studio.
Mihara developed his distinctive stoneware technique over approximately ten years of experimentation. His work is characterized by modern geometric forms combined with the natural texture of Izumo clay, fired without glaze to reveal the inherent beauty of the material. The resulting pieces feature sharp angular forms with a bronze-like blue-gray surface accented by natural kiln effects.
His innovative approach has earned him numerous accolades, including the Grand Prize at the Tanabe Museum Tea Ceremony Sculpture Exhibition in 2001 and 2008, and the Japan Ceramic Society Award in 2008. Mihara's work bridges traditional ceramic values with contemporary aesthetic sensibilities, and his pieces are held in museum collections. He continues to work from his studio in Shinjiko-cho, Matsue City.
