【Product details】
This is a rare and evocative miniature portable Buddhist shrine set featuring Fudo Myoo (Acala), dating from the 20th century. Such compact devotional sets were commonly purchased as sacred talismans by pilgrims visiting Naritasan Shinshoji Temple in Chiba, one of Japan’s most important centres of Fudo Myoo worship.
The set consists of two miniature devotional objects.
The first is a seated figure of Fudo Myoo housed within a metal zushi (portable shrine) with hinged doors. The figure is made from a moulded material, possibly clay or pressed incense ash. The figure is currently detached from the shrine. The base of the shrine bears a raised inscription reading “Naritasan” (成田山), directly linking it to the temple. The interior retains traces of lacquer mixed with gold powder, symbolising the deity’s radiant spiritual power.
The second piece is a relief carving of Fudo Myoo set within a simple wooden box. This figure is fixed in place and is surrounded by a flaming mandorla. Remnants of red pigment remain on the flames, representing the purifying fire that destroys ignorance and evil.
Fudo Myoo is one of the Five Wisdom Kings and is revered as a powerful protector. He is traditionally depicted holding a sword to cut through delusion and a rope (kensaku) to bind negative passions, with a fierce expression that reflects his unwavering compassion and resolve to guide all beings toward enlightenment.
The set shows honest age and use, with a deep, atmospheric patina. There is surface wear throughout, rust visible on the metal hinges, lacquer discolouration, and small chips. The wooden box shows wear and the lid is missing. These signs are consistent with long-term devotional use. Please refer to the photos for details.
