Flint Core for Flake Production
Culture
Neolithic
Date
circa 7th–4th millennium BC
Description
Large flint core of elongated, sub-oval form, produced from a single block of grey-blue flint with areas of preserved cortex. The surface shows multiple broad negative scars from repeated flake removals on several faces, indicating intensive exploitation of the raw material. The removals are irregular and non-convergent, with no intentional shaping of a functional cutting edge. The piece was used as a core for the production of flakes rather than as a finished tool. The flint displays natural inclusions and iron-oxide staining consistent with long burial.
Condition
As found. Intact. Surface wear and patination consistent with age. No restoration.
Dimensions
Length: 16.5 cm
(heavy and large example)
Provenance
Private collection of a French doctor, formed before the 1970s.
