【Product details】
This katana features an Edo period blade bearing the signature “Kane” (兼) on the tang. The single-character signature “Kane” indicates a lineage from the Seki school of Mino province, whose swordsmiths commonly used this character to honour the legacy of Magoroku Kanemoto and Izumi no Kami Kanesada. The tang shows partial polishing and natural ageing.
The fittings are date to the Showa period, mounted in a black lacquer scabbard. The tsuba (sword guard) is iron, featuring a plum blossom openwork design. The plum blossom is a traditional Japanese motif symbolising perseverance, renewal, and the coming of spring, as it blooms even in the cold of late winter. The tsuba includes a sekigane (copper insert) in the central opening, with visible adjustment marks around it. The habaki is made of copper.
The sword comes with a copy of its Firearms and Swords Registration Certificate, as the original document will be returned to the authorities. The certificate, issued in Tokyo under registration number 259142, records the sword as a katana with a blade length of 62.9 cm, a curvature of 1.4 cm, and three peg holes. The inscription on the front of the tang reads “Kane” (remainder cut). It was issued on 19 November 1991.
The tip has minor scratches and a few tiny nicks along the cutting edge. The ridge area shows a few forging openings. The tang bears marks and wear. The tsuba is slightly loose and moves a little. The lacquer on the scabbard shows cracks and small scratches. Metal fittings display patina and discolouration, and the tsuba shows light rust. Overall, the sword shows wear and minor blemishes consistent with age and use but remains in good used condition. The silk bag has some stains. The display stand is not included. Please refer to the photos for details of the condition.
The display stand is not included with this lot.
Total length of the blade: approx.78 cm
Total length including scabbard: approx.101 cm
