About the Artist
Hisatoshi Iwata’s artistic style is characterized by the delicate and brilliant use of colored glass and the refined, elegant beauty achieved through the skillful application of gold leaf.
Employing sophisticated and intricate techniques reminiscent of bronze ware, lacquerware, and ceramics, he developed a wide variety of patterns, including peacock motifs, feather patterns, leaf designs, and wave motifs.
He excelled in free-blown glass techniques, and his works, which fuse innovation with traditional aesthetics, combine both functionality and artistry.
Iwata made his debut at the Nitten Exhibition in 1949, where his work was selected for the first time, and he continued to exhibit his works there every year thereafter.
In 1976, he received the Minister of Education Award, and in 1982, he was honored with the 38th Japan Art Academy Award, earning him high acclaim in Japan.
In 1972, he became the first president of the Japan Glass Art and Crafts Association, greatly contributing to the development of the industry.
His works are included in the collections of many renowned museums both in Japan and abroad.
In Japan, his pieces are held by institutions such as the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto the Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art and the Japan Art Academy.
Internationally, his works were permanently acquired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in 1986, and are also part of the collections at the Düsseldorf Museum, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, the Denver Art Museum, and other prominent museums around the world, reflecting his high international reputation.
