西亞 Rock Crystal 兽形护符 (沒有保留價)
A fine Western Asiatic zoomorphic amulet formed from a beautiful translucent rock crystal. The amulet features a wide cylindrical body with a circular base that tapers towards the head. The head features two rounded ears and an elongated snout. The creature perhaps represents a seated lion. The amulet is perforated horizontally through the neck for suspension. Scratches, hairline cracks, and wear and minor dark encrustations to the surface.
On top of gold, stones such as carnelian, turquoise or rock crystal were used for jewellery. In particular, the latter was appreciated for its delicate transparency, and further used in objects such as vessels or tools. Representations of animals comprised a large portion of the Ancient Near Eastern artistic repertoire. Specifically, images of wild animals and creatures considered dangerous or powerful appear in all periods of ancient Near Eastern art, dating back to the Neolithic period.
Measurements: L 1.6cm x W 1cm
Provenance: Ex S.M. Collection, London, Mayfair, acquired 1970s-90s.
