Artist Profile
Suzuki Katsushi was born in Bizen City in 1949 (Showa 24) as the second son of master craftsman Suzuki Koya. After training in Kyoto, he returned to study under his father and thoroughly inherited the traditional pottery techniques and firing methods of the Suzuki lineage. Throughout his career, Suzuki has achieved 69 awards and prizes at prestigious exhibitions including the Japan Traditional Kogei Exhibition.
Suzuki is particularly renowned for his work with rough clay construction and the beautiful yellow sesame glaze effects that have become his signature style. His expertise lies in creating pieces using rough clay mixed with small stones, which when fired in the traditional climbing kiln, produces well-fired surfaces with rich layers of yellow, blue, burnt brown, and charred sesame effects combined with natural drip patterns.
As a practitioner of the climbing kiln (noborigama) firing method, Suzuki continues the ancient tradition of multi-chamber kilns built on hillsides, where works are fired over extended periods to achieve the distinctive surface effects and robust character of traditional Bizen ware. His dedication to preserving and advancing these time-honored techniques while creating works of contemporary relevance has earned him recognition as an important figure in the ongoing Bizen pottery tradition.
