Exceptional specimens show a subtle but noticeable color change, appearing bright chrome or lime green in daylight and shifting to a deeper olive-green or yellowish-green under incandescent or warm light. This gemstone is also famous for its extremely high dispersion, producing intense rainbow “fire” that often exceeds that of diamond. These stones are exceptionally rare. Gem-quality sphene itself is uncommon, and chrome-rich, color-change material from Skardu is found only in very limited pockets, usually in small sizes. Clean, well-cut examples with strong fire and visible color change are considered collector-grade and are seldom available on the market.
