Item Description
This is an exquisite Nerikomi (marbled clay) Matcha bowl created by 厚東建信-Koto Kenshin, founder of the renowned Kohagi Kiln in Hagi, Yamaguchi Prefecture.
The piece showcases the sophisticated nerikomi technique, where different colored clays are kneaded together to create beautiful natural marbling patterns that flow organically throughout the bowl.
The interior displays a mesmerizing spiral pattern in warm earth tones ranging from cream to rich brown, creating a dynamic visual effect that draws the eye inward. The exterior features elegant horizontal striations with natural variations in tone, demonstrating the masterful control of the nerikomi process.
The bowl is finished with a transparent glaze that not only enhances the beauty of the clay patterns but also makes it fully functional for tea ceremony use.
Hagi ware (Hagi-yaki) has been treasured by tea masters for over 400 years, and this piece from Kohagi Kiln continues that distinguished tradition. The nerikomi technique employed here is particularly challenging and relatively rare in Hagi ware, making this bowl a unique addition to any collection.
The piece comes with its original signed wooden box (tomobako) inscribed "Matcha-wan" (抹茶碗) and bearing the artist's signature "Kenshin" (建信) with seal, confirming its authenticity.
This bowl is in excellent condition with no signs of use, showing only minimal aging from long-term storage. It represents both a functional tea ceremony vessel and a beautiful example of contemporary Japanese ceramic art.

Artist Profile
厚東建信-Koto Kenshin (1965-) founded Kohagi Kiln in 1965 in Hagi, Yamaguchi Prefecture, establishing himself as a respected ceramic artist working in the traditional Hagi ware style. Hagi ware originated in the late 16th century and has been highly valued in the tea ceremony world for its warm, soft clay body and subtle glazes. Kenshin specialized in the challenging nerikomi (marbled clay) technique, creating unique patterns through the careful layering and kneading of different colored clays. Each piece is one-of-a-kind, as the marbling patterns cannot be exactly replicated. The kiln continues today under his son, Koto Komei, who independently took over operations in 2016, maintaining the family's commitment to excellence in Hagi ware production.
