Val Saint Lambert Signed Crystal Perfume Bottle – “BRUNA” Model, 1940s
An exquisite example of Belgian crystal craftsmanship, this perfume bottle was produced by the legendary Val Saint Lambert manufactory during the 1940s. The model, known as “Bruna”, is documented in the original Val Saint Lambert catalog under the taille (cutting pattern) C.G.824 and is part of the Garniture de toilette Bruna set.
The flacon is crafted in vibrant two-tone overlay crystal, with a deep ruby red layer masterfully cut through to reveal the clear base beneath. The design features strong vertical facets that refract light in rich, saturated tones and emphasize the sculptural shape of the bottle.
Still partially retaining its original Val Saint Lambert paper label and bearing the engraved signature on the base, this piece is both authentic and collectible. The atomizer hardware is fully functional, with a new bulb and tube installed for usability.
Whether displayed or used as intended, this perfume bottle represents a refined blend of function, luxury, and mid-century elegance, and is a rare survivor of high-style European glass design from the 1940s.
About the designer:
Charles Graffart (1893–1967) was a prominent Belgian glass designer and long-time artistic director at Val Saint Lambert. Known for his innovative approach to form and cutting techniques, he played a central role in modernizing the company’s style during the Art Deco period. His work blends clarity of geometry with technical virtuosity and remains highly sought after by collectors of decorative arts.
Val Saint Lambert, nestled in Seraing near Liège, Belgium, is a beacon of crystal craftsmanship with a legacy spanning nearly two centuries. Established in 1826 by chemist François Kemlin and engineer Auguste Lelièvre, the company transformed the remnants of the Val-Saint-Lambert Abbey into a thriving glassworks.
The 19th century marked a period of significant growth for Val Saint Lambert. By the early 1900s, the company employed over 5,000 workers, producing 120,000 pieces of glass daily. Their creations, renowned for exceptional quality and intricate designs, found admirers worldwide, including in Tsarist Russia and North America. A testament to their artistry is the “Vase of the Nine Provinces,” a monumental piece over 2 meters tall and weighing 200 kilograms, crafted for the 1894 World Exhibition in Antwerp.
The 20th century brought challenges, including the impacts of two World Wars and economic downturns. Despite these obstacles, Val Saint Lambert’s resilience ensured the preservation of its artisanal heritage. Today, the company seamlessly blends traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design, producing exquisite crystal pieces that cater to modern aesthetics.
Val Saint Lambert stands as a symbol of Belgian craftsmanship, where each piece reflects a harmonious blend of history, artistry, and innovation.
