A striking and authentic medieval silver adjustable ring, featuring a centrally set deep red cabochon stone, mounted in an ornate openwork bezel richly decorated with pierced and engraved motifs. Rings of this type were widely used during the High Medieval period and are particularly associated with personal adornment, talismanic belief, and symbolic display.
The bezel is elaborately formed with symmetrical perforations and decorative relief elements, creating a crown-like or floral appearance around the gemstone. The red cabochon—possibly garnet or red glass, both commonly employed in medieval jewelry—was prized for its vivid color and was often believed to possess protective or spiritual qualities. The open-backed construction allows light to pass through the stone, enhancing its luminous depth.
The ring features an open, adjustable hoop, a practical medieval solution allowing the ring to be resized and worn comfortably. The silver surface shows a strong, honest patina with areas of oxidation and wear consistent with age, burial, and prolonged use. No modern repairs or restorations are observed.
Comparable rings are documented across medieval Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean, worn by laypeople and pilgrims alike, sometimes serving as amulets or symbols of status and devotion
