A late 18th / early 19th century French brass and steel bloodletting fleam with two right-angled blades and a sharp "bloodstick" folding out from the contoured brass case. One blade marked "acier fondu". Since medieval times it was believed that bloodletting would restore the balance of the body and aid with recovery from illness. The practice died out in the 19th century.
