He studied under masters including Kato Kobei V and Kato Kozo, making his debut at the prestigious Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition in 1965. Over his illustrious career, Tamaoki has received numerous accolades, including the Japan Ceramic Society Award in 1980. In 2008, he was designated as a holder of Gifu Prefecture's Important Intangible Cultural Property for Oribe ware, cementing his status as one of the leading contemporary practitioners of Mino ceramics. As the fourth-generation master of Gyokuzan Kiln, he continues the family tradition while bringing fresh interpretations to classic styles including Oribe, Shino, and Ki-Seto.
