A fine Romano-Celtic bronze coin, commonly known as ‘barbarous radiates,’ imitating a bronze antoninianus of Tetricus I. The obverse features a radiate and draped bust facing right, with the legend C P E TE[RIC]VS CAES. The reverse displays a draped female figure facing left, holding flower in her right hand and raising skirt with her left. The legend reads [...] PVBLICA.
'Barbarous radiates', so called after the radiates worn by the emperor on the obverse, were ancient Celtic imitations of Ancient Roman bronze coins. They were typically minted in Britain, Gaul or Germany during the Crisis of the Third Century, when official Roman coinage was scarce. Their production, while not encouraged, was tolerated by the authorities, as it provided a useful source of small change in their regions. While some were almost exact copies of their Roman counterparts, barbarous radiates were overall much smaller and cruder.
Diameter: (circa) 1.7cm
Weight: 3.23g
Provenance: Ex Cambridgeshire private collection, acquired 1970s.
