This substantial planter is lavishly embossed with dense floral and pinecone motifs, combined with powerful sculptural lion head mascarons. The jardinière stands on four elegant claw-style feet, giving the piece a strong architectural presence. The combination of naturalistic ornament with classical lion masks is characteristic of the transitional period in European decorative arts, when Historicism began to merge with the emerging Jugendstil movement. The underside is signed with a triangular maker’s mark “J.P.A.” The surface displays a beautiful warm, original patina.
