Middle Byzantine Bronze Cross Pendant (c. 10th–12th Century AD)
This is a cast bronze cross pendant from the Middle Byzantine period, most likely 10th–12th century AD. The cross is distinguished by:
Faceted, segmented arms with collar-like rings near the terminals
A raised diamond-shaped (lozenge) boss at the center, framed by incised lines
An elongated upper arm forming an integrated suspension loop
Slight asymmetry and casting seams typical of hand-cast devotional objects
The overall design reflects a more stylized and decorative phase compared to earlier plain crosses. Such crosses were worn as personal devotional pendants, believed to provide spiritual protection.
The surface shows silver-grey to dark patination with mineral accretions, consistent with long burial and copper-alloy corrosion.
