The powerful facial features, including the wide, intense eyes and firmly set mouth, convey a strong and commanding presence. During the Edo period, small carved masks such as this were produced as pilgrimage souvenirs and protective charms for visitors to major temples such as Tōdai-ji and Hōryū-ji. These miniature masks were often based on famous historic or temple-owned masks and reduced in size so they could be kept for personal devotion or as talismans to ward off misfortune. The mask is hand-carved from wood and weighs approximately 20 grams. It is notably light, suggesting the use of well-aged, fully dried wood. The carving is bold and direct, with simplified yet strongly modeled features that emphasise character and presence rather than refinement. The surface shows clear signs of age, including wear from handling, surface deterioration, areas of lacquer loss, fine lacquer cracks, and a deep, naturally developed patina. These characteristics contribute to the historical atmosphere of the piece. Please refer to the photos for details. Dimensions: approx.
