Born in Yamanashi Prefecture, he graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts in 1994, receiving the Harada Prize, and completed his master's degree in ceramics at the same institution in 1996. After serving as a ceramics instructor at Seto Ceramic High School in Aichi Prefecture for ten years, he established his independent studio in Yamanakako Village, Yamanashi in 2006. Watanabe is a member of the Japan Kogei Association and the Japan Ceramic Art Association. His works have received numerous prestigious awards, including the Asahi Shimbun Prize at the Arita International Ceramic Exhibition (2024), the Special Prize - 14th Kakiemon Memorial Award at the 11th Tobi Exhibition (2024), the Japan Kogei Association Award at the Traditional Crafts Ceramic Division Exhibition (2011), and the Grand Prize at the Otaki Hokkaido Ceramic Exhibition (2010).
