A Japanese studio pottery bowl set consisting of five hand-thrown ceramic bowls, dating to the Shōwa period (mid-20th century).
Each bowl is individually decorated with hand-painted botanical motifs in iron-oxide pigment, including bamboo, thistle and wild plant designs. The bowls feature a soft ivory glaze with fine natural crackle, clearly visible on the interior, and are finished with a dark iron-oxide rim.
All bowls bear an impressed potter’s mark on the base, indicating production by an individual studio potter or small workshop rather than factory manufacture.
The set is preserved in its original wooden tomobako, featuring handwritten Japanese calligraphy and a red artist’s seal (hanko). The calligraphy is executed in a highly cursive style and has not been fully deciphered, which is typical for artist-signed tomobako of this period.
The overall aesthetic reflects Japanese studio pottery / mingei principles, combining functionality with expressive brushwork and natural glaze effects.
