This historic estate not only brought worldwide attention to the region, but also demonstrated the quality achievable not only with Nebbiolo, but also with "foreign" varieties. The story began over 150 years ago, when Giovanni Gaja founded the winery in 1859 to complement the food in his restaurant. Today, the company is run by the fourth and fifth generations, Angelo Gaja and his sons. Over the years, the Gaja name has grown to represent not only exceptional quality, but also unique and intriguing flavors unlike any other in the region. The single-vineyard wines are a blend of Nebbiolo and Barbera, like all wines produced before the introduction of the DOCG designation. This designation was established in 1966 and the wines must be 100% Nebbiolo. For this reason, Gaja downgraded most of its single-vineyard wines and instead adopted the Langhe Nebbiolo DOC designation, aiming to achieve the specific style it desired.
