Ancient Hellenistic Bronze Coin – Alexander the Great AE Bronze Unit (Herakles / Zeus
Type), c. 4th–3rd Century BC
An authentic ancient Hellenistic bronze coin, specifically an AE Bronze Unit, issued in the
name of Alexander III of Macedon (Alexander the Great) or struck shortly after his death as a
posthumous issue.
The obverse depicts Herakles wearing the lion skin of the Nemean Lion, the standard
portrait type used on Alexander’s coinage and often mistaken for Alexander himself in heroic
form.
The reverse shows Zeus seated on a throne, holding attributes (now worn), a canonical
design used across Alexander’s bronze and silver issues.
With a diameter of approximately 19 mm and a weight of c. 6–7 g, this piece firmly belongs to
the category of AE Bronze Units, smaller-denomination coins intended for everyday circulation
throughout Alexander’s empire and the early Hellenistic kingdoms. These are bronze issues,
not silver denominations such as tetradrachms or drachms.
The coin displays a stable green and brown patina with earthen encrustations, consistent with
long burial and genuine ancient origin.
