A male and female Ewe figures from Togo. Dark to middle brown patina. The right foot is half-missing on the figure without the stand.
Such figures are seen as receptacles for the souls of dead twins. Venavi's are comparable with the Yoruba "ibeji" twin cult.
Provenance - Wolf Lohse: he was the former curator of the Africa Dept. of the Ethnological Museum in Hamburg.
