A beautiful and uncommon ancient Roman amulet carved in translucent pale blue glass, depicting a small recumbent animal — most likely a mouse or young hare. The soft modeling, rounded body and pierced suspension loop indicate it was intended to be worn as a protective charm. Glass amulets were valued not only as decoration but also for their perceived protective properties. In Roman belief, small animals symbolized vigilance, cleverness, and survival — qualities desirable in daily life and particularly meaningful for children and travelers. Roman Glass & Its Natural Blue Colour: Roman glass was produced from silica sand, natron and lime. The delicate blue colour is original and results from natural iron traces in the sand reacting during firing. Roman furnaces could not fully eliminate these minerals, producing the characteristic pale aqua tone typical of early Imperial glass. Unlike later colored glass, this hue is not applied — it is inherent to the material and therefore a reliable indicator of authentic Roman manufacture.
