Ancient Roman Bronze Snake Bracelet / Bangle -- Circa 1st–3rd Century AD
Sorry, no shipping outside the European Union to stay fully compliant with cultural heritage regulations.
A beautiful and authentic ancient Roman bronze bracelet formed as a coiled rod terminating in two stylised serpent heads. The piece displays a naturally developed olive-green archaeological patina, consistent with long burial and untouched surfaces.
Snake-form jewellery was extremely popular in Roman personal adornment. The serpent symbolized protection, eternity, renewal and healing, being closely associated with the household protective spirits (Lares), and with the cult of Asclepius — god of medicine. Such bracelets were worn both as ornament and as protective amulets.
The elegant simplicity of the heads and the rounded tapering terminals are typical of Roman provincial jewellery rather than later medieval work.
