The print is preserved in excellent condition. Description This woodblock print depicts Takamiyama Daigorō, one of the most important and recognizable figures in modern sumo history. His powerful posture and calm expression reflect the strength and dignity of professional sumo during the Shōwa period. Biography Takamiyama Daigorō (1944–2017) was a professional sumo wrestler born in Maui, Hawaii. He entered professional sumo in Japan in 1964 and steadily rose through the ranks, eventually reaching the rank of Sekiwake, where he competed for many years at the highest level of the sport. Historical Significance In July 1972, Takamiyama made history by becoming the first foreign-born wrestler to win a Makuuchi (top-division) championship, a groundbreaking achievement that marked a turning point in the internationalization of sumo.
