Hilarionite is a rare secondary iron mineral, which was discovered for the first time in Greece.
Its name comes from the Hilarion mine in Kamariza (Agios Konstantinos) in the Lavrio region, which is also the type locality of its occurrence.
It is formed in the oxidation zone of sulfide ores. In Lavrio it often coexists with other minerals such as gypsum, azurite, goethite and jarosite. According to data from Mindat.org, it was officially approved as a new mineral by the IMA in 2011.
