This is an exquisite red lacquer Maki-e (蒔絵) medium Natsume (中棗) for the Japanese Tea Ceremony, a classic utensil for storing powdered thin tea, complete with a Shifuku (仕覆).
This Natsume has a solid wooden core, fully coated with red lacquer (Shu-urushi [朱漆]) on the exterior and black lacquer on the interior, with a smooth and lustrous finish. Both the body and lid are decorated with the Maki-e technique, using gold powder to depict fan (Sensu [扇面]) patterns. The fans are painted with flowers and figures, accented with delicate gold lines, showing delicate and elegant craftsmanship, fully expressing the refined beauty of tea ceremony utensils.
Maki-e is a traditional Japanese lacquer art technique that combines gold and silver powder with lacquer. Through processes of painting, powder sprinkling, and polishing, it creates magnificent patterns that contrast beautifully with the red lacquer base, splendid and elegant.
The fan motif is highly classic in Japanese tea ceremony utensils, symbolizing elegance, literary grace, and classical charm, making it a highly representative decorative pattern in traditional lacquer art.
This item includes a Shifuku, made of high-grade Nishijin-ori (西陣織) brocade, used to wrap and protect the Natsume. It is also an important ceremonial accessory for the tea ceremony, whose gorgeous woven texture complements the red lacquer Natsume perfectly.
The Natsume and Shifuku show natural oxidation and minor signs of age appropriate for their period. The overall condition is good.
