A very unusual and interesting Qing Dynasty blue and white painted porcelain funerary or epitaph box, with the inside containing written details of the deceased.
The rectangular box is made of stoneware porcelain in two parts, with the lid slotting over the base. It has been decorated in blue and white painted design of figurative foliage and arabesques, similar to that seen on earlier export wares, dating to approximately 1800's. Inscribed internally with personal attributes to the deceased. Very fine detailing, possible historical repair noticed under magnification to base, but virtually unseen with naked eye. Could be an original crease in porcelain before firing.
Acquired in 2020 in Essex, UK as part of a previous private collection dating to the 1970's.
The seller guarantees that he acquired this piece according to all national and international laws related to the ownership of cultural property. Provenance statement seen by Catawiki.
The seller will take care that any necessary permits, like an export license will be arranged if necessary, and will inform the buyer about the status of it if this takes more than a few days.
