The form is tall and softly rounded, with a gently swelling body that narrows naturally toward the neck, giving the piece a calm, balanced silhouette when viewed from any angle. The surface shows subtle variations created during firing, with lighter grey areas emerging organically against the deep black ground, adding quiet movement and depth without decoration. Created using high-temperature carbonised firing, this Black Pottery achieves a subdued, jet-black tone that is rare even within Mashiko ware. The exterior retains a dry, tactile texture typical of Sakata’s work, while the overall appearance feels restrained yet powerful. It can be enjoyed both as a sculptural object and as a vase, functioning equally well as a standalone art piece. The underside bears the artist’s mark. Mashiko ware originated in the late Edo period in Mashiko Town, Tochigi Prefecture, and is celebrated for its earthy texture, durability, and warm handmade character, remaining one of Japan’s most recognisable ceramic traditions. Sakata Jinnai (b. 1943) is a distinguished Japanese artist celebrated for his innovative Black Pottery. A student of the legendary Hamada Shoji, Sakata established his kiln in Mashiko in 1966. His career spans decades of international exhibitions, from Takashimaya to New York and Shanghai, and his practice has evolved to include glass, washi, and bonsai. Exploring cosmic and natural themes, his status as a master is evidenced by his dedications of work to Japan’s most sacred sites, including the Ise Grand and Izumo Taisha shrines. There is a stepped area on the base that occurred during firing in the kiln and is not later damage. Good used condition with minor blemishes and a small chip on the top rim.
