The damage must be reported to your local post office within 7 days of delivery, and promptly to us and Catawiki support. 【Product details】 This striking Showa period Mashiko ware black pottery piece by Sakata Jinnai (坂田甚内) is a contemporary ceramic work that pursues a unique artistic style while still respecting the traditional character of Mashiko ceramics. It can be enjoyed both as a sculptural object and as a vase. Created using high-temperature carbonised firing, this pottery achieves a rare and sophisticated jet-black finish that is unusual even within Mashiko ware. The surface features Sakata’s signature deep relief “Shinjin-mon” motif, giving the vessel a powerful sculptural presence and a bold tactile texture. Mashiko ware originated in the late Edo period in Mashiko Town, Tochigi Prefecture. Celebrated for its earthy texture, durability, and warm handmade character, it remains one of Japan’s most recognisable ceramic traditions. Sakata Jinnai (b.1943) is a distinguished contemporary Japanese artist. After studying under Kamoda Shoji in 1964, he established his kiln in Mashiko in 1966 and gained renown for his innovative black pottery. Since 1971, he has held numerous solo exhibitions in Japan and abroad, including at Takashimaya, Seibu, Green Gallery, New York (1994), Shanghai (2009), and the Xi’an World Horticultural Expo (2011). His artistic scope later expanded into washi paper (1995), glass (2000), LED lighting (2003), hyper-powered drawing (2006), and bonsai pots (2007). In 2013–2014, he dedicated works to Izumo Taisha, Ise Jingu, and Atsuta Jingu. His creations frequently explore cosmic and natural motifs, and are featured in publications such as MOKU and Harmony.
