【Product details】
A striking sculptural set of Mashiko ware lidded boxes by Sakata Jinnai (b. 1943), created in 2014, showcasing the artist’s powerful Black Pottery aesthetic combined with a dramatic use of gold.
Formed in black-fired clay, the exterior surfaces are fully carved with Sakata Jinnai’s signature deep relief Shinjin-mon pattern. The bold, rope-like carving gives the work a strong tactile presence and an almost archaeological quality, emphasising weight, texture, and rhythm across the surface. In contrast, the interiors are finished with applied gold leaf using a foil-press technique, creating a warm, luminous glow that heightens the visual impact when the boxes are opened.
The set assembles into a tower-like sculptural form, as shown in the photos, and separates into four components: one lid and three stacking bases, each with a gold-lined interior. Signed on the underside.
Mashiko ware originated in the late Edo period in Mashiko Town, Tochigi Prefecture, and is celebrated for its earthy textures, durability, and warm handmade character.
Sakata Jinnai (b. 1943) is a distinguished Japanese artist celebrated for his innovative Black Pottery. A student of the legendary Hamada Shoji, Sakata established his kiln in Mashiko in 1966. His career spans decades of international exhibitions, from Takashimaya to New York and Shanghai, and his practice has evolved to include glass, washi, and bonsai. Exploring cosmic and natural themes, his status as a master is evidenced by his dedications of work to Japan’s most sacred sites, including the Ise Grand and Izumo Taisha shrines.
Age-appropriate wear and handling marks are present, with light blemishes and signs of use. The gold leaf shows wear inside the boxes. Please refer to the photos for details.
