Byōbu屏風 - 紙, 木, 絲, 六扇屏风,描绘源平之战,前景为海战与马队。 - 日本 - 江户时代(18世纪末—19世纪初)

A stunning six-panel Genpei kassen screen (源平合戦屏風) painted on paper with natural pigments and gold sand, depicting Battle of Yashima during the Genpei Wars (1180–1185). The scene portrays the Minamoto cavalry entering the water to attack the Taira ships, set within a marine context and inspired by the narrative tradition of the Heike monogatari. A bold and unconventional composition that departs from traditional aesthetic conventions. The scene is distinguished by an unusual stylistic choice: the samurai and horses are depicted prominently in the foreground, on a large scale, occupying almost the entire surface of the panels. Rather than presenting a distant, elevated view of the scene — as commonly seen in comparable works — the artist brings the figures forward, creating a direct and powerful visual impact. Armored horsemen advance through the waves with their mounts partially immersed, while archers and warriors armed with naginata fight from light boats. The stylized waves, rendered with overlapping sinuous lines, create a continuous rhythm across the full horizontal development of the screen. The armors, in tones of red, green, and blue, are depicted with careful attention to the details of cuirasses, kabuto helmets, and military equipment. The screen is finished with elegant silk borders and a wooden frame. The screen can also be easily mounted on a wall or used as a room divider. For the battle of Yashima by Utagawa Kunisada see pictures n 15. Byōbu (屏風), literally “wind protection screens,” are traditional Japanese folding screens originally created to divide spaces and today appreciated above all as striking wall-mounted paintings. ---The byobu is in good condition. Minor wear to the paper and pigments, along with restorations consistent with age and use. Wear to the lacquered frame, with one metal fitting dome replaced. Please refer to the pictures for further details. The item will be carefully packed and shipped via DHL or FedEx, accompanied by the original certificate of authenticity issued by Mastromauro Japanese art gallery based in Milan, Italy. 569
