The year Ansei 4 (1857) corresponds to the Gregorian year 1857 (and partially 1858), a turbulent period during the late Edo shogunate (Bakumatsu). It was the year preceding the signing of the Treaty of Amity and Commerce between Japan and the United States. This pivotal turning point saw significant advances in Japan's modernization, including the death of senior councilor Abe Masahiro, the full establishment of Yoshida Shōin's Shōka Sonjuku school, and the introduction of modern medicine through Dr. Pompe's visit to Japan.
