一个木制面具 - Baule - 象牙海岸 (沒有保留價)

A "Masque royal Baule", Ivory Coast, collected in the Sakassou region, incl. the stand. The masks of the Sakassou region in central Côte d’Ivoire are among the most celebrated within the Baule artistic tradition because Sakassou is historically regarded as a political and cultural heartland of the Baule people. As an early royal center, Sakassou became a major locus of artistic production, and workshops there developed highly refined sculptural standards that influenced surrounding areas. Sakassou masks are especially famous for their formal balance and idealized beauty. They are typically portrait-style face masks representing serene female faces, even when worn by male dancers. The features are harmoniously arranged: high rounded forehead, elongated almond-shaped eyes that are often downcast, a straight and narrow nose, and a small, composed mouth. The expression conveys inward calm and spiritual dignity rather than dramatic emotion. One reason for their fame is the extraordinary surface finish. Sakassou carvers are known for smooth, luminous polishing that enhances the mask’s sculptural clarity. The modeling is soft yet precise, with subtle transitions between planes rather than sharp angularity. Scarification marks, when present, are finely incised and rhythmically placed, adding elegance without disturbing the serenity of the face. The coiffures are another hallmark. They are often elaborate and architectonic, rising above the forehead in carefully structured forms that balance the oval face below. These hairstyles are not merely decorative but reflect status, refinement, and cultural ideals of beauty. Sakassou masks are also renowned because of their role in Goli performances, one of the most important Baule masquerade traditions. In these ceremonies, masks appear in a sequence culminating in the most refined and spiritually elevated types. The aesthetic perfection of Sakassou masks made them highly sought after by collectors and museums in the 20th century, further enhancing their reputation. Their fame, therefore, rests on a combination of historical importance, technical mastery, harmonious proportions, serene expression, and their central role in Baule ceremonial life. CAB34979
