正宗的 Guerzé(Kpelle)面具——几内亚/利比里亚地区 - Guerzé - 幾內亞 (沒有保留價)
Expressive and powerful Guerzé (Kpelle) mask originating from the forest region of Guinea and Liberia.
Although acquired in Ivory Coast, the stylistic features strongly align with Guerzé / Kpelle carving traditions of the Mano River region.
Key characteristics:
• Long projecting beak-like nose (hornbill form)
• Cylindrical eye projections with circular openings
• Dark, ritualized surface patina. The red cloth on the forehead is an indicator this mask was owned by influential elders in the tribe.
• String smoky scent from being used during rites
• Missing original crest / head ornament (visible attachment points remain)
• An interesting feature of this mask is the crown of charms (the small carved pieces attached to the rope). These are often added to a mask to increase its spiritual ‘ weight’ or to represent the mask's status as an important mask
The surface shows strong oxidation, layered patina and ritual wear consistent with ceremonial use. The interior is hollowed by hand and contains attachment holes for costume integration.
Masks of this type were used in social regulation ceremonies, spirit manifestations and performance contexts. The masks were usually during rituals covered in materials such as millet, palm wine or sacrifice/animal blood. The elongated hornbill form symbolizes spiritual authority and vigilance. Its strong beak symbolizes speech power and decision-making
