Title:
Large Japanese Meiji Period Bronze Incense Burner (Koro) with Birds and Shishi – 37 cm
Description:
A fine and impressive Japanese bronze incense burner (koro), dating from the Meiji period (1868–1912).
This richly modelled bronze koro is decorated in high relief with birds among flowering branches, symbolising harmony and prosperity. The body is flanked by sculptural handles, and the burner stands on an elegant openwork base. The domed lid is surmounted by a finely cast shishi (mythical lion-dog), a traditional guardian figure in Japanese art.
The casting quality is excellent, with crisp details in the feathers, leaves and floral motifs, and a beautiful deep brown patina that has developed naturally over time. The proportions are elegant and powerful, making this a true decorative and collector’s piece.
Period: Meiji period (1868–1912)
Material: Bronze
Height: approx. 37 cm
Width: approx. 17 cm
Condition: In very good condition for its age. Minor signs of age and use consistent with an antique object. No structural damage. Please see photos for a complete impression.
A striking and authentic Meiji-period incense burner, perfect for collectors of Japanese art or as a statement piece in an interior.
