Item Description
松野龍司 Matsuno Ryuji(1951-2005)
This is an exquisite yakishime (unglazed, high-fired) flower vase (hanaire) crafted at Ryokuei Kiln (Ryokuei-gama), a distinguished Hagi ware atelier located in Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan. The piece was created by Matsuno Ryuji, the founder of Ryokuei Kiln and a highly accomplished master of Hagi ware.
Yakishime is a demanding firing technique in which the vessel is fired at high temperature without any glaze, allowing the clay itself — its natural minerals and texture — to emerge as the sole surface expression. The resulting finish exhibits a rich, earthy depth with subtle variations in tone and texture born from the kiln's flame, making each piece entirely one-of-a-kind.
This tall, elegant flower vase displays the characteristic warm grey-brown hue of unglazed Hagi clay, with a naturally rugged yet refined surface texture that beautifully reflects the hand of the artist. Its slender, upright form makes it ideal for displaying a single stem or a modest arrangement of seasonal flowers. The piece comes in an unused condition and is accompanied by its original wooden storage box (tomobako).
A rare opportunity to acquire a work by Matsuno Ryuji — a celebrated figure in the world of contemporary Japanese ceramics.
