A six-panel byōbu (folding screen) in gilt silk depicting two blue magpies perched on protruding rocks along the bank of a river, with softly fading mountain profiles on the horizon. Attributed to Katō Eishū (1873–1939). The screen is finished with a lacquered wooden frame. The screen can also be easily mounted on a wall or used as a room divider. Byōbu (屏風), literally “wind protection screens,” are traditional Japanese folding screens originally created to divide spaces and today appreciated above all as striking wall-mounted paintings. ---The byobu is in good condition, with wear to the silk, stains and retouching to the gilding.
