Authentic German Schornsteinfeger Glücksbringer bookends, cast in solid cast iron circa 1930, representing the traditional chimney sweep, one of Europe’s most important historic good luck symbol figures.
These original bookends were produced in Germany during the interwar period, circa 1925–1935. The figure depicts a Schornsteinfeger (chimney sweep) holding a small bouquet of flowers behind his back, a classic Glücksbringer motif symbolizing prosperity, protection, and good fortune.
For centuries, the chimney sweep has been regarded throughout Germany and Central Europe as a powerful Glücksbringer and good luck symbol. Due to their essential role in preventing dangerous chimney fires, chimney sweeps became deeply respected figures associated with safety, prosperity, and positive future outcomes.
These bookends are cast in heavy solid cast iron and retain their original paint, with beautiful authentic antique patina developed over nearly a century. The sculptural detail, proportions, and traditional subject clearly reflect German decorative arts of the interwar period.
Such objects were widely used in libraries, offices, and homes as both functional and symbolic decorative items. Today, original Schornsteinfeger Glücksbringer bookends from this early period are highly collectible and increasingly sought after.
