极大且罕见的寒山与拾得像 - 木, 鍍金, 玻璃, 漆 - 日本 - 江戸时代(17世纪—18世纪)
A rare impressive and massive pair of gilt-lacquered wooden figures depicting Kanzan and Jittoku 寒山拾得.
Their carefree attitude symbolizes their knowledge that "the things which most men strive for are illusions, and that what really counts is not rank or riches but their own Buddha nature."
Finely carved and painted in gilt and polychrome lacquer, the two figures are shown in animated interaction. One points toward the other, while the second stands with open hands and a playful expression. Their lively poses and expressive faces convey the humour traditionally associated with these legendary eccentrics.
Both are dressed in Chinese-style robes, richly decorated with scrolling vine patterns issuing lotus blossoms. One robe is adorned at the front with two roundels depicting dragons, the other with two shishi medallions. The eyes are painted behind crystal inlays, the lips accentuated in red, and the black hair flows down along the back.
An old label pasted to the lower section of one robe reads: “polychrome carved wood figures of Hehe Shen.”
Kanzan and Jittoku, known in Chinese as Hanshan and Shide, are Zen figures traditionally associated with Tiantaishan during the Tang dynasty (618–907). They are typically shown holding a scroll and a broom, though these figures are depicted without their usual attributes. Their joyful expressions and playful interaction clearly identify the subject.
