Hand-Turned Solid Wood Sphere Box with Marquetry (Intarsia) Inlay – Bone Glue & Shellac Finish. A solid wood sphere, turned by hand from a single mass of timber. After shaping, the surface was covered with hand-cut marquetry (intarsia) made from selected exotic veneers. Each element was glued using traditional Bone glue. The surface is finished with shellac - a natural resin secreted by the lac insect (Laccifer lacca) Shellac creates a deep, warm glow that modern polyurethane simply cannot imitate. The sphere separates into two hemispheres. Inside - clean, smooth wood. Outside - geometry, rhythm, and natural contrast of grain. Because of its age, there are visible signs of time: – minor veneer chips – small losses in the marquetry – surface wear consistent with age All imperfections are clearly photographed and visible in the listing. This object sits between sculpture and functional form. It can be used as a box, but it was made as an object.
