Authentic Edo Period Samurai Armor Kacchu Yoroi, Life-Size Black Lacquered Iron with Kabuto, Menpo, Armor Stand and Storage Box
This authentic life-size Samurai armor (Kacchu Yoroi) dates to the Edo period, most likely from the mid to late 18th century, a time when armor was crafted not only for warfare but also as a powerful symbol of samurai status, lineage, and ceremonial dignity. The helmet (kabuto) features a striking large circular gilt lacquer maedate (front crest), an imposing round form enclosing a stylized mon motif reminiscent of an abstracted hollyhock design, set against deep black lacquered iron, creating a bold and authoritative presence. The kabuto is constructed in traditional suji-bachi form with multiple iron plates, finished in black lacquer and fitted with dark blue lacing, while the interior retains its original structure and padding. The menpo (face armor), lacquered in vivid red on the interior and fitted with a naturalistic moustache, reflects refined Edo-period aesthetics, combining martial severity with theatrical expression. The cuirass and kusazuri are composed of black lacquered iron plates laced in dark indigo, forming a complete and harmonious suit that conveys both strength and elegance. Unlike purely decorative later reproductions, this armor preserves the correct structural configuration of a functional gusoku, yet its refined balance and uniform lacing indicate production during the peaceful Edo era, when craftsmanship reached a highly sophisticated level. The presence of the original armor stand and traditional storage box further enhances its historical integrity, as complete life-size sets with box and stand are increasingly rare on the market. When displayed, the armor commands space with quiet authority—the black lacquer absorbing light, the golden maedate catching it—evoking the dignified atmosphere of a samurai residence in the late Edo period. A powerful and complete example of Japanese martial culture, combining kabuto, menpo, full body armor, stand, and storage box into one impressive and highly collectible ensemble.
